  1. Hi there,

Once you add your Google Account to your Android phone, your Google Contacts (or Gmail Contacts) will automatically sync. If your Google Contacts are not syncing with your device, one of the steps below will likely fix the issue.

Confirm Android Sync is turned on for your device

    1. Touch Settings > Data usage > Menu

    2. Make sure Auto-sync data is checked

    3. Even if sync is already turned on, try turning sync off and on a few times

Confirm Google Contacts sync is turned on

    1. Touch Settings > Accounts > Google > Select your account

    2. Make sure Contacts is checked

    3. Even if sync is already turned on, try turning sync off and on a few times

Make sure that background data is enabled. If you restrict background data, some apps and services won’t work unless you’re connected to WiFi.

    1. Touch Settings > Data Usage > Menu

    2. Make sure “Restrict background data” is not selected

Clear app cache and data for Google Contacts

    1. Touch Settings > Select Applications Manager (or Apps)

    2. Swipe to All > Choose Contact sync

    3. Select Clear cache and clear data

Remove your Google Account and setup again

    1. Touch Settings > Accounts > Google > Select your account

    2. Choose Remove account

    3. Then re-establish account

Keep in mind that sync might take longer on a slower connection, especially if other apps are syncing at the same time. If you’re still having trouble, go ahead and post a new question here in the forum to get help from our Gmail experts.

Last note on Contacts saved to your phone: When you create a new contact, many phones default to saving the contact locally to the device. These contacts are not actually saved as Google Contacts. Always check to make sure the contact you’re adding is labeled as a Google contact (rather than a phone contact or other app contact).
